Art Basel, an international art fair held in Miami the first week of December, is Miami’s most important week of the year. The growing art scene in Miami is giving new life to the city that was otherwise mainly known by tourists as a spring break and bottle service destination. The truth is, Miami has done a lot of growing up in recent years and from what I’ve witnessed it’s all thanks to the growing art scene. While local artist continuously make the city more vibrant and colorful all year long, it’s the week of Art Basel that draws in thousands upon thousands of international artists showcasing their works in hundreds of galleries and fairs across the city.
Having lived in Miami from 2010-2015, I feel very fortunate to have been able to witness the early developmental years of Miami’s growing art scene in Wynwood- a neighborhood that didn’t have a single bar 5 years ago, to being a neighborhood now known internationally (and with that, rising rents and high-end retail).
Below are some shots from the last 5 years of Art Basel. I feel together, they sum up the feeling of what Art Basel is. I won’t be attending this year but I know there will be some great galleries, murals, and parties for those who are there this week. Enjoy!
