My Top 20 Photos Of Art Basel.. Plus 60 More.
December 2014

The entrance of Scope. Miami Beach

It’s been hard for me to narrow down the 4,000 the photos I took over 10-14 days that consumed my life during Art Basel. 4,000 photos. I know, I’m crazy.

So I narrowed it down to my favorite 20 photos of Art Basel.. With 60 more favorites following those which are equally awesome – just keep scrolling along. If you dig it, share it. Boom.

I’ll start with my own collaboration with Brooklyn based artist Vexta. Her work is dope – and you can see it all over the world including her recent walls in Malasia. We met in Brooklyn over the summer and decided to team up and do a collaboration piece in Miami during Art Basel. She painted the walls, I projected the movement ontop of her painting. It was quite the hit – a subtle peacefulness which wasn’t in your face, but if you took notice, was beautiful. There will be another post dedicated to this project soon.

View a short clip of the project in action here: https://vimeo.com/113624226

Vip lines. Vip lines everywhere. Every year since I first witnessed Basel in 2010 has gotten exponentially larger. Every year becomes more about what lists you are on and getting that VIP status. It’s kind of fun for a week to be around all this craziness, but it does get tiring.

In probably the single most written about project of Art Basel (aside from Usher charging his cell phone in a woman (NSFW)) The much written and blogged about story was the RAW Project at Jose-de-Diego Middle school. It began, as Patrick Walsh told me, with some interest from the middle school wanting to get a mural painted. Patrick, knowing how crazy Art Basel can get, mentioned they could get dozens of artist to paint their walls. Even after getting 40 artists on board, when Basel came around and more artists heard about it, more artists wanted to get involved. The goal of the project is to not only inspire local kids, but also to raise money to get them an arts program in the school. You can help out by donating here: http://www.projectwynwood.com/raw/. The walls of the middle school are really remarkable. If you are in Miami it is a MUST to go check out.

It’s impossible to see even a small fraction of all the art being displayed in Miami this week – so don’t try. Pick a few fairs and keep an ear out for anything that’s getting a lot of talk. Collect those VIP passes and go for free!!

Having moved from midtown two years ago, the Scope international contemporary art show is held right on the sandy beach, steps away from the ocean. Moving their location to the beach was a nice move. They set the tent up nicely and the beach’s casual atmosphere carries over into the show itself.

Late night Basel. No surface left un-marked. Wynwood Miami

To Wynwood, Art Basel is like a shot of steroids. The neighborhood explodes for a couple weeks with numerous new businesses and popup shops opening up during this time every year. Construction of new buildings and venues all seem to revolve around the ever important date of Art Basel – from what I view it is the most profitable week for Wynwood during the year. This all started with street art. Only 5 years ago, most of the murals were centered around the Wynwood Walls project started by Tony Goldman (rest in peace). Every year since then, more and more artists have been coming into town and the walls have expanded outward through the whole neighborhood. The street art scene has exploded so much that there are no bare walls in Wynwood anymore – it’s insane really. I was talking with Chaz (artist duo The London Police) and he mentioned how he’s never seen anything like Wynwood. Having painted all over the world, Chaz said there are always pockets of art in cities here and there, but never has he seen consecutive wall after wall after wall of murals like there is in Wynwood. It’s become very competitive for artist to come into Miami during Art Basel and get wall space. What started out as a few walls has transformed an entire neighborhood in Miami. Witnessing this change since moving to Miami in 2010 (when there wasn’t a single bar in Wynwood) to seeing what it is now is something I feel very lucky to have been a part of. Thanks Tony Goldman for sparking this movement up. Though, now most of the talk about Wynwood are the new “luxury” condos building being built, and more and more warehouses turning into restaurants or bars. The neighborhood is inevitably changing.
